My Idea
I am Antonia Bedrous, the owner of Liwan Sharqi. My roots are in Aleppo, Syria, and I have been living in Germany since 2015. The annual visit to my hometown of Aleppo is always a significant event for me. During this time, my parents can spend valuable time with their grandchildren who were born in Germany. This visit is also a reminder of how rich in culture this historic city is.
The culture of Aleppo and Syria, in general, includes traditional professions such as the production of organic laurel soaps, known as "Aleppo soaps," as well as crocheting and knitting clothing and tablecloths. Handmade mosaic boxes are also a symbol of Syrian craftsmanship. In Syria, those working in these traditional professions strive to keep them alive. As a German-Syrian woman, I feel a responsibility to support these friendly and resilient people and to make their beautiful work known in Europe and worldwide. That's why in 2022, I decided to open my own online shop.
My mission
My mission at Liwan Sharqi is not just to generate good revenue but also to serve a good purpose. Through Liwan Sharqi, we support the individuals working in these traditional professions so they can produce more products and preserve these crafts in Syria despite the challenging circumstances.
Our items come from Syria and are predominantly handcrafted by self-employed, professional Syrian women. Some of the products are crafted in a workshop for individuals with special needs in Aleppo. These individuals are highly skilled and create excellent products. To help you find their products more easily, I have linked them in a separate category. When you purchase our products, you are directly supporting the people in Syria who need help the most.
